The WalkWise Walking Programme - Exploring the Broads

The area is wonderful for walkers. The finest ways to explore the region are to take a gentle cruise across the open waters, and to walk through the delightful countryside. This trip will enable you to combine both to experience the best of Norfolk.

After a hearty breakfast we will be heading into the heart of the broads. Our route follows the ancient ways through the fragile maze of rivers, reed fringed dykes, shallow lakes, tangled ancient woodlands and the vast areas of sumptuous marshland. En route we will no doubt pause to sample the delights of a relaxing Norfolk pub. For many, the climax of the day will be a boat ride into the heartland of the winding broads.

As the peaceful cruise edges its way through the still waters, we will pass into the inner sanctum of the broads, an area exclusively reserved for the sailor and wildlife. It is often at these times where those magical moments are experienced, a sighting of the rare marsh harriers floating over the reedbeds or the playful otters searching for a fresh trout.

Around the area:
The Norfolk Broads are the largest wetland in Britain covering some 150 miles of navigable rivers. The Broads themselves are a series of naturally occurring shallow lakes that support one of the most important habitats in the UK. In fact the area is of international importance for birds, flora and its diverse ecosystems including open river valleys, secluded woodlands, and the tranquillity of the heath and marshlands, not to mention a spectacular coastline. However for many the region is typified by the marshes, peaceful waterways and gently turning windmills.

There are also some extensive RSPB nature reserves and local Botanical Reserves, so there’s plenty to see. If you haven’t been to this area before this is an excellent opportunity to broaden your experience!
