Otterburn 'Click on the thumbnails to see the full-size picture, then use your Web browser's Back button to return to this page' Northumbria is the forgotten National Park, it has vast tracks of beautiful and varied, untouched countryside. It has a wonderfully rich and varied tapestry of landscapes including : the rich forests of Kielder, the sandstone escarpments of Simonside, the sandy bays of Dunstanburgh, the remote Upper Coquet valley with all its wildlife to the wild rugged and open tops of the Cheviot Hills. It's hard to think of any area with more history than Northumbria. For you can see the 4000 year old 'Cup and Ring' marks of our ancient ancestors, the 2000 year old 'World Heritage Site' of Hadrian's Wall and numerous castles. This turbulent kingdom was also ironically home to 'The Venerable Bede' and St Cuthbert. So vast was their impact that may abbeys and priories remain and a long distance walk 'St Cuthberts Way', through many of his haunts, has also been created. |
