Overview:
Following the huge popularity of our 2004 and 2005 walking tours to Switzerland, WalkWise International have managed to secure the prestigious 4 star Park Hotel du Sauvage in Meiringen, Switzerland.  Being centrally located within the Bernese Oberland, which is symbolised by the classic trio of the Eiger, the Mönch and Jungfrau , it is no surprise that this is an excellent walking area. Meiringen itself, at 595m, lies at the foot of the Sustan, Grimsel, Grosse Scheidegg and Joch passes.  These are enveloped by the towering rocky peaks of the Wellhorn and the Wetterhorn, glaciers stream down from their heights and a kaleidoscope of lush flowers adorn the alpine meadows.  Needless to say all this combines to create one of the most picturesque landscapes in Europe .

Impressive Walking:
Meiringen is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding area.  WalkWise have specifically planned the walks to encompass an amazing wealth of scenery and terrain.  In order to exploit the area to its fullest we will visit a different valley and mountain range each day.  We will use Switzerland ’s fantastic integrated transport system to enable everyone to experience some of the finest walking in the Alps .

We will wander through the amazing Rosenlaui Valley with clear cascading streams, colourful meadows, perched glaciers and the Reichenbach Falls .  A combination of mountain railways, gondolas and chair lifts enable the harder walkers the opportunity to experience the high alpine ridges like the fine Faulhorn, airy Axalp and majestic Rothorn Ridge.  The easy walkers are not outdone though, as they too will reach the high alpine plateaus and ascend such delights as Mannlichen Mountain , where you may be fortuitous and hear the alpine horn blowers.  A stroll over the Schynige Platte allows everyone to drink in the amazing views to the north face of the Eiger.  Some walks include visits to the beautiful towns of Grindlewald and Wengen, and there are picturesque mountain villages and secluded lakes with panoramic views over the whole area.  Be sure to bring your camera and a lot of film or memory!

But remember with two walks to choose from every day, you can either take it easy, walking 7-9 miles with around 1500ft of ascent, or push yourself a little, doing 10-13 miles with around 3000ft ascent. You can curtail some routes by hopping on a gondola, lifts, mountain railway, train or post bus.

The Hotel:
The Park Hotel du Sauvage, dating back to 1880, is one of the oldest and finest hotels in Meiringen. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stayed here whilst planning
Sherlock Holmes’ fateful final fight and subsequent fall over the Reichenbach Falls . Since then the elegant building has been carefully and tastefully renovated to capture a sense of calm that subtly blends every imaginable 4 star comfort and modern amenity with period style.  This is complemented by friendly and professional staff who will look after you and ensure a relaxing and enjoyable stay. Needless to say all the ensuite bedrooms are well equipped with hair dryers, telephones, mini bars, cable TVs and radios (and some have excellent views too!)

Dining is a real experience, with buffet style breakfasts that prepare you for the day ahead, and in the evenings you are spoiled with appetising three course meals in the splendid halls or bistros.  Afterwards you may wish to relax in the peaceful gardens, enjoy some folk music, jazz or disco in the hotel’s own dance bar, or explore the town itself.  If you still have some energy left, then just a few minutes walk from the hotel you have the complementary use of an excellent health club equipped with fitness area, jacuzzi, steam bath, sauna and swimming pool.
