The Queens Diamond Jubilee and the Cancer Research Beacon of Hope

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacon: Scafell Pike

 Introduction:

2nd – 5th June 2012 is the
official celebration weekend for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.   To mark this occasion Buckingham Palace, in connection with the   Department for Culture, Media and Sport are organising a number of activities   including the Jubilee Beacons, The Thames River Pageant, the Big Jubilee Lunch  and the Diamond Jubilee Pageant.


Cancer  Research UK has been selected as one of the chosen charities to be involved with  the Jubilee Beacons.

Jubilee  Beacons: On  Monday 4th June 2012, the aim is to light 2,012 (or more) beacons - the  length and breadth of the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, the
Commonwealth and other countries around the world to mark this important and  historic moment in The Queen's Reign.

 Four  charities have been selected to light beacons at the top of the four highest  peaks in the UK; 

Cancer  Research UK Scafell Pike England
Help for Heroes Ben Nevis Scotland

Walking with the Wounded Snowdon Wales     
Fields of Life Slieve Donard Northern Ireland

Buckingham Palace is over-seeing  this activity but it is down to each ndividual charity to organise and execute their specific event.  

The Palace are in liaison with ITN and hope to film live footage of the four charities lighting the beacons at the four highest peaks followed by the Queen lighting the National Beacon, which will be a diamond shaped beacon at Buckingham Palace.   We  currently anticipate that we will be required our beacon at approximately
2229. The Queen is due to light the  National Beacon at 2230.

We have  been requested to arrange a small ceremony on the day of the walk where we will organise for each climber to be presented with the national flower, a red rose,  which will accompany them to the peak.

There is a very special commemorative book being produced for the Queen in memory of   the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. This book will contain all the beacon
locations, along with the organisations involved and the names of the climbers.  This book will then be given to The Queen after the event, as a permanent reminder of the moment in history celebrated
