What a beauiful part of the world this is (photos). We were staying right in the centre of Alnwick, a very friendly market town with an amazing castle and fairytale castle. The weather forecast indicated we would miss the major storm that was supposed to batter the south of England, so we all felt rather smug heading off on our vintage bus along the coast. We crossed open expansive beaches, forded swollen rivers, battled against the cold and wind to visit Dunstanburgh Castle, Craster, Boulmer and Alnmouth. Unfortunatley, we were forced to take shelter in the country pubs along the way in order to allow the tide to turn, so that we could complete the walk, and that may have been the cause of the somewhat reddened faces! We even visited a teepee like iron age hut, that newcastle university constructed, but provided a great shelter to the passing hail stones! Which led to the quote of the weekend which must be "is this original then"!!!
Sunday dawned dry and we should have guessed we were being misled. The road to the start of the hard walk was closed due to snow!!! (new quote of the weekend, surrounded by snow"is it going to be cold") Check the forecast no, dry and bright intervals. Oh well a quick rethink, new plan ok off we go! a nice shortened route for the harder walkers saw us heading off up towards hedgehope-but after 4 miles and 3 hours of 4ft deep fresh snow, some tired legs, some wet feet, we stopped playing snowball fights and swam through another few miles on snow in search of the cars. Quite good fun I thought!!!
